✦ Spring Wrenching — Seasonal Maintenance Guide
"Road Atlanta Opens In 4 Days. Is Your Machine Ready?"

Spring in Georgia means temperatures climbing, humidity rising, and more hours in the saddle than any other time of year. April through June is when Atlanta-area riders put the most miles on their machines. It is also when deferred maintenance becomes a problem at speed. Before you load for Braselton or point north toward Suches, run this checklist. Every item below applies whether you ride 1,000 miles a year or 10,000.

The Spring Pre-Season Checklist

Priority One
Engine Oil & Filter
If you didn't drain and replace before winter storage, do it now. Cold starts over the winter break down additives. Georgia spring riding means extended heat — degraded oil in a hot engine is a short road to a blown gasket or worse. Change the filter simultaneously. Use the weight your manufacturer specifies for spring/summer temps — typically a 10W-40 or 10W-50 for air-cooled engines in Georgia heat.
Priority One
Battery Load Test
A battery that barely turns the engine over in March will strand you on a 90-degree April afternoon. Load-test, not just voltage-test. A battery can read 12.6V and still fail under load. If it's more than three years old and you didn't trickle-charge through winter, replace it before the season starts. Cost of a new battery: $80–$150. Cost of a breakdown on 400: priceless and not in the good way.
Critical
Tires: Pressure, Wear & Date Codes
Check the date code, not just the tread depth. A tire more than five years old is a liability regardless of tread. Georgia heat accelerates rubber degradation. Pressure drops during cold months — always re-set to spec before your first long run. On track-adjacent events like Road Atlanta's Fan Laps, inspect the sidewalls for cracking and cupping. A corner blown at 60 mph on GA-348 ends weekends permanently.
Drive System
Chain, Belt & Shaft Drives
Chain riders: clean, inspect, lubricate, and measure for stretch. A worn chain damages sprockets — and sprocket replacements cost three times what a chain does. Belt riders: inspect for cracks, fraying, and glazing. Shaft drive riders: check your final drive fluid — it's overlooked and it runs hot in summer. All three systems benefit from an inspection of the rear sprocket/pulley while you're back there.
Safety — Non-Negotiable
Brakes: Fluid, Pads & Lines
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture over time, dropping its boiling point. If you haven't flushed it in two years, do it before Road Atlanta. Inspect pad thickness. Squeeze the lever — it should feel firm, not spongy. If you have braided steel lines and they're more than four years old, inspect for abrasion or cracking near the caliper. Budget $30 for fluid, a few hours, and leave nothing to chance on a mountain road.
Engine Health
Air Filter & Fuel System
If your machine sat over winter with fuel in the tank, inspect your fuel for varnish and the tank for moisture separation. Ethanol-blend fuel sitting 90+ days can degrade carburetor jets and injector tips. Replace the air filter if you rode through fall on dusty roads. Georgia roads in late winter are sandy — the filter catches all of it. A restricted filter robs power and richens the mixture at altitude on the North Georgia roads.

Spring-Specific Georgia Notes

Pollen season is real and it gets into everything. Clean and lubricate all pivot points, especially clutch and brake levers. Check throttle cable free play — pollen and grit can cause binding at the grip. If you ride with a windscreen, inspect the fasteners; Georgia pollen and rain cycles cause corrosion on uncoated hardware faster than you'd expect.

Cooling system riders — set your temp gauge baseline early in the season. Atlanta traffic in April starts reaching 95°F. An air-cooled engine in stop-and-go on I-285 works harder than most riders account for. Know your normal operating temperature before you're in it deep. Liquid-cooled bikes: check coolant level, inspect hoses for hardening and cracking, and verify your radiator cap is holding pressure.

Suspension inspection for mountain riding. GA-348, Suches Loop, and Blood Mountain will expose soft forks, blown rear shocks, and worn steering head bearings before the first switchback. If your front end dives aggressively under braking or your rear bounces unpredictably on rough pavement, fix it now. These roads do not reward deferred suspension maintenance.

Kawasaki

2026 Model Year · Two New Platforms
Supernaked · New Model
Z1100 SE
$14,999 MSRP · U.S. Market
Kawasaki's new flagship supernaked finally fills the gap left when the Z1000 exited the U.S. market in 2016. The Z1100 SE arrives with 134 hp from a 1,099cc inline-four — the same updated engine that debuted in the Ninja 1100SX SE and Versys 1100. Taller fifth and sixth gear ratios stretch the range. Suspension is a full-adjustable Showa big-piston fork up front paired with an Öhlins S46 rear shock. Brembo M4.32 calipers on Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires. The full electronics suite includes Kawasaki Cornering Management Function, KIBS, traction control, a bidirectional quickshifter, cruise control, and a 5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity. The Z1100 SE is the only Z model in the lineup built on an aluminum twin-tube frame — not the typical steel trellis. Available now at Kawasaki dealers.

The KLE500 ABS is a rally-inspired mid-size adventure bike built on a high-tensile steel trellis frame with a 451cc parallel-twin engine, 21-inch spoked front wheel, and 210mm of long-travel suspension front and rear. KYB inverted forks. Selectable ABS. The SE trim adds a TFT display, larger skid plate, metal-reinforced hand guards, and a taller windscreen. Under $6,600 for the base puts it below the KLR 650 in price. This is the most affordable gateway into serious ADV riding that Kawasaki has ever offered in the U.S. Spring 2026 arrival at dealers.

Off-road mode loosens traction control and disables rear ABS. Lighter aluminum rims on Metzeler Tourance dual-purpose tires. ✦ Recommended Gear — Spring 2026 Picks
"Georgia Spring Means Heat, Rain, and 200 Miles Before Noon. Gear Accordingly."

April through June is Georgia's best riding window — and its most punishing for gear. Temperatures swing from 45°F at dawn on GA-348 to 90°F on I-285 by noon. Afternoon thunderstorms can materialize in 20 minutes. The gear recommendations below are built specifically for Southeast spring riding: hot-weather capable, prepared for rain, and appropriate for the North Georgia mountain roads this community lives on.

Helmets

Sport / Track
Shoei RF-1400
Red Line's benchmark full-face for sport riding and track days. SNELL 2020 certified, aerodynamically refined, and ventilated for southern heat. The multi-density EPS liner and CNS-1 shield system make it competitive with helmets twice the price. Available at WOW Motorcycles and Mountain Motorsports locations. MSRP around $550–600. If you're doing Road Atlanta Fan Laps, this is the minimum standard to hold yourself to.
Adventure / Dual-Sport
Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS
The standard recommendation for ADV riding in North Georgia. MIPS rotational protection, aggressive peak visor, and dual-pane shield for mountain sun angles. Converts between road and off-road configurations. Runs cooler than a dedicated sport lid in standing traffic, which matters on a 90-degree Friday afternoon leaving Atlanta. Widely stocked at Mountain Motorsports and WOW. MSRP around $200–250.

Jackets

Mesh / Summer
Alpinestars T-GP Plus R v4 Air
Georgia April starts warm and ends hot. A textile or leather jacket without mesh panels will cook you by 10 AM. The T-GP Plus R v4 Air is a mesh sport jacket with CE Level 2 shoulder and elbow armor, a back protector pocket, and four-way stretch paneling. It breathes aggressively and packs into a tail bag. The sport cut works on naked bikes through tourers. MSRP around $250. Also consider the Rev'It! Tornado 4 H2O — a mesh jacket with a removable waterproof liner that handles the inevitable spring thunderstorm without making you stop to change.
Touring / All-Weather
Klim Latitude
For riders who need one jacket that handles everything from the Blue Ridge at 60°F to Atlanta at 95°F — the Klim Latitude is the answer. GORE-TEX waterproofing, Primaloft insulation that's removable, and D3O armor at shoulders, elbows, and back. It is heavier than a pure mesh jacket and the price reflects it (MSRP ~$700), but it's the jacket you buy once. Particularly relevant for ADV riders doing the Suches Loop or any overnight mountain run where weather changes are certain.

Gloves & Boots

Gloves · Summer
Alpinestars SP-8 v3 Air
Short-cuff perforated leather with hard knuckle protection, silicon grip palm reinforcements, and CE Level 1 certification. The spring standard for sport and naked bike riders who want protection without a gauntlet in Georgia heat. Perforated back panel works in 90-degree weather. MSRP around $100. For touring riders, the Alpinestars Andes v3 Drystar glove adds waterproofing for the rain windows that are inevitable April through June.
Boots · All-Season
Sidi Adventure 2 Gore-Tex
The boot recommendation that covers the widest range of Georgia riding. Full ankle protection, GORE-TEX waterproof lining, oil-resistant rubber sole, and stiff shin/calf protection without being a dedicated motocross boot. Walks comfortably in Dahlonega or at the Road Atlanta paddock. The Gore-Tex membrane handles creek splashes on Warwoman Road and afternoon rains on GA-52. MSRP around $350. The Alpinestars Corozal Adventure Drystar is a lighter alternative at around $250.

Electronics — Spring Essentials

Cardo Packtalk Edge. The communication standard for group rides in Georgia. Mesh intercom, 1.6-mile range, and the system Harley-Davidson has paired with the CVO Street Glide. If your group rides together and communicates via phone-on-speaker, this is the upgrade worth making before Road Atlanta. MSRP $299 single, $499 duo pack. Available at Atlanta H-D and WOW Motorcycles.

Sena 50S. The Cardo alternative with equally strong Mesh Intercom 2.0 technology, better hardware audio quality in many riders' opinion, and broader compatibility with non-Sena units. MSRP $299. If your crew is already mixed-brand on intercoms, the 50S has the most interoperability. Available at WOW and Mountain Motorsports locations.

Tire pressure monitoring. Before Road Atlanta weekend and before any mountain run — add a TPMS system if you don't already run one. The Fobo Bike 2 is the Bluetooth standard at around $80, pairs with your phone, and gives you live pressure readings from the seat. A cold Georgia morning in the mountains can mean tires under-inflated by 6+ PSI compared to where they were the night before. Know your numbers before you ride.

✦ 4 Days To Road Atlanta

Issue No. 7. Bike nights on the books for the next two weeks, the spring maintenance rundown you needed before hitting the mountain roads, a complete guide to demo rides at greater Atlanta dealerships, and the five most significant new models landing in Atlanta showrooms right now. This is what Red Line is built to deliver — the full picture before you make a move.

Next issue is Thursday April 17 — the Road Atlanta opening day issue, with live coverage plans, paddock access, and the North Georgia route conditions report for the spring surge. Take care of your machine before Thursday. Check your tires. Load the camping gear. Point it north. We'll see you in Braselton.
